Alex was born in 1895 in Newhills Parish Aberdeen.  Alex's father was John Maitland Murray and his mother was Elizabeth Mathieson Murray.  His paternal grandparents were James Murray and Jessie Maitland; his maternal grandparents were James Bisset Murray and Charlotte Rae. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Thomas, Jessie, Bella and Charlotte.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
