Margaret was born in 1830.  Margaret's father was George Gordon and her mother was Elizabeth Smith.  Her paternal grandparents are William Gordon and Margaret Cooper. She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, James, George, John, Mary and Ann.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
