John was born in 1878.  John's father was George Gordon and his mother was Helen Anderson.  His paternal grandparents were George Gordon and Elizabeth Smith; his maternal grandparents were George  Anderson and Catherine Reid. He had four brothers and five sisters, named George, William, Alex, John, Catherine, Helen, Maggie, Bella and Mary.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 68 in 1946.
