Margaret was born in 1875 in Old Machar Aberdeen.  Margaret's father was James Bird and her mother was Margeret Davidson.  Her paternal grandparents were George Bird and Helen Alexander; her maternal grandparents were John Davidson and Isabella Wilson. She had five brothers and a sister, named James, Leslie, Ebenezer, George, Robert and Jeanie.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
