Leslie was born in 1876 in Old Machar Aberdeen.  Leslie's father was James Bird and his mother was Margeret Davidson.  His paternal grandparents were George Bird and Helen Alexander; his maternal grandparents were John Davidson and Isabella Wilson. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Ebenezer, George, Robert, Margaret and Jeanie.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
