George was born in 1879 in Newhills Parish Aberdeen.  George's father was James Bird and his mother was Margeret Davidson.  His paternal grandparents were George Bird and Helen Alexander; his maternal grandparents were John Davidson and Isabella Wilson. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Leslie, Ebenezer, Robert, Margaret and Jeanie.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
