James was born in 1897 in Bervie Kincardineshire.  James' father was James Alexander and his mother was Mary  Walker.  His paternal grandparents were David Alexander and Isabella Mitchell; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Laurence Walker and Mary Coull. He had a brother and a sister, named David and Hilda.  He was the oldest of the three children.
