David was born in 1899 in Bervie Kincardineshire.  David's father was James Alexander and his mother was Mary  Walker.  His paternal grandparents were David Alexander and Isabella Mitchell; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Laurence Walker and Mary Coull. He had a brother and a sister, named James and Hilda.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
