Howard Woodfield

    Here is a short biography of Howard Woodfield, born South Sheilds 1912.
    Howard's mother died when he was 8 years old.
    He was raised by his Aunt Annie (Land), who later married his father when
    Howard was 15.
    He followed his father into a seagoing career.
    After obtaining his certicates in the late 1920's, he obtained a job in the
    maritime industry in Shanghai, China, where he lived for a while about 1935
    to 1937.
    He then moved to Sydney, Australia, in about 1938, where he got married. He
    served in the Australian shipping insustry untill after World War 2.
    He joined the Queensland Ports service after the war, and served as a
    harbour pilot in Gladstone and Makay, before ending up in Brisbane.He was a
    harbour pilot in Brisbane from about 1950, and after becoming Assistant
    Harbour Master, ended his career as Harbour Master in the mid 1970's when he
    retired. The family lived in Cooper Plains, and later in Mt Gravatt
    districts of Brisbane.
    After Howard eretired they moved to Murwilumba, northern NSW, where  they
    ran a smallholding and raised cattle.
    He died of cancer.
