    The second child of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, Anne was born in London in 1950, and baptised at Buckingham Palace by the Archbishop of York. Styled Princess Anne of Edinburgh, she was a bossy and vivacious child.
    
    Anne was privately educated before attending school in Kent, and was successful in her studies, but her real love was horse riding. Anne immediately begun her tireless work in Charity after entering public life – at 20 she became president of the Save The Children Fund, founded the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, and she is currently Commandant-in-Chief of St John Ambulance. Anne holds a number of honorary appointments with the British Armed Forces and carries out more engagements than any other British Royal.
    
    Anne’s love life featured suitors such as Andrew Parker Bowles and Olympics champion Richard Mead, but in 1973 she married Lieutenant Mark Phillips at Westminster Abbey in London. Phillips was offered an Earldom but turned it down, so the couple’s children hold no titles. Phillips was made a Captain in the Queen’s Dragoon Guards, and the couple had their first child Peter Phillips in 1977. Their second child Zara was born in 1981. Anne was the target of a kidnap attempt in Pall Mall London when a deranged individual tried to bundle her into a car and hold her for ransom.
    
    In 1989 Princess Anne and Mark Phillips separated and were divorced in early 1982. The Princess remarried later that year in Scotland to another military man – Timothy Laurence, a Naval Commander.
    
    Anne’s driving passion is the outdoors, sport and particularly horse-riding, and in 1971 she was voted the BBC’s sporting personality of the year after winning the individual title at the European Equestrian Championship. She won a silver medal in the individual and team events at the 1975 European Eventing Championship and in 1976 participated with the British Team in the Montreal Olympic Games. She is a British representative in the International Olympic Committee, and a member of the London organising committee for the 2012 Olympic Games.
