  • William SANDERSON (Henry SANDERSON, Mary JOWETT, Peter, Peter) was born on 2 Apr
    1822 in Sheffield, Yorkshire England. He died in 1870 in India.
    William married Marianne ELLIOTT in 1822 in Bombay, India. Marianne was born in 1832 in
    Bycullah India.
    William and Marianne obtained a divorce about 1870. They obtained a divorce.
    William Sanderson the second child of Henry and Mary Ann Ives was born on 2ndApril 1822 in
    Sheffield, Yorkshire, England and baptised in the same town on 9thMay 1822. He left home at about sixteen
    years of age, obtaining a position on approximately 200 pounds ($400) per year by overstating his age. His
    father when learning about the situation informed William’s employer which resulted in him losing the
    appointment. He then enlisted in the military, but was bought out about 12 months later. Then unknown to
    his father he left for India as a travelling companion to a gentleman. Unfortunately the gentleman died
    shortly after they reached Calcutta leaving William on his own. Soon after this he volunteered and joined up
    for the Afghan war in about 1839 or 1840. After the war he travelled to Bombay where he later obtained a
    position on the Great India Peninsula Railway Company as a Civil Engineer, remaining in their employ for
    about 12 years. On 5thJanuary 1853 he married Marianne Elliot, whose father Augustus William Elliot
    worked for the Bombay Customs Department. William and Marianne had a family of five children, two of
    who died as infants in India. The fifth child Edith being born in England in 1861. It was after this birth that
    William accused Marianne of adultery and sued for a divorce. In those times a divorce case was heard in
    court before a jury, with the jury in this particular case being unable to reach a verdict. The case was
    dismissed and William left England for Paris, France where he lived for some time before returning to India.
    Marianne remained in England with her children. In January 1867 William again sued for divorce and this
    time around received the verdict he was after. Marianne made a decision to start a new life and sailed for New
    Zealand with her three surviving children, Louisa, Edward and Edith. Leaving London on 23rdJuly 1867
    onboard the ship “Melita”. William died in India not long after this time in about 1870, aged 48 years from
    heat apoplexy. Marianne died at Seabourn, Wellington, New Zealand on 25thAugust 1913 aged 81 years.
