  • John SANDERSON (Henry SANDERSON, Mary JOWETT, Peter, Peter) was born in 1834 in
    Sheffield, Yorkshire England. He died on 15 Jun 1907 in "Westbury" Albert Rd Strathfield. He
    was buried on 17 Jun 1907 in St Thomas C Of E Enfield NSW.
    John married Ellen SHEATHER, daughter of Henry SHEATHER and Mary BUTLER, on 24 Jan
    1857 in St Johns Camden NSW. Ellen was born on 3 Apr 1836 in Brede Sussex England. She died
    on 6 Nov 1927 in Strathmore Private Hospital, Stanmore NSW. She was buried on 7 Nov 1927 in
    St Thomas C Of E Enfield NSW
    
    John SANDERSON
    Arrived in Australia 16 Nov 1855 on the Chowringkee.He was 18yrs old
    and was a chainman of Sheffield Yorkshire.
    Macarthur papers show that from 1860-1868 he leased 16 acres in Cawdor
    Road. No rent was charged for 5 yrs from 1866-1868 rent was 16 pounds
    2 shillings.Later he leased 132 acres,possible at the south end of
    Menangle railway station,where he ran a thriving nursery and orchard.

    John Sanderson was a younger half-brother to Edmund and Henry and was also on board the
    "Chowringhee". All three brothers were the sons of Henry Sanderson. Mary Ann Ives his first wife was the mother of Henry and Edmund. John's mother was Elizabeth Hibbard. Both Henry Sanderson and his first wife Mary Ann Ives were noted as being deceased on the shipping list of the "Chowringhee", while John's mother Elizabeth Hibbard was listed as still living in 1855.
    JohnSanderson became employed at “Camden Park” as a gardener and nurseryman. He later leased a small block of land from the Macarthur family around 1860. Before the 1870’s he appears to have had a large garden and vineyard in Cawdor Road and later at Menagle he incorporated an orchard. This lease was taken up on 18thMarch 1868 and was in excess of 16 acres. Later again he leased 132 acres from the Macarthur family in about 1875, with the rent being set at 21 pounds per year. John died aged 73 years in 1907 and was buried in the Church of England cemetery at Enfield, Sydney, NSW.
    
    
    The following is an obituary-claimed to be dated 1909,   (although I believe 1907 is the correct date) and is copied as it appeared in print. (Note.. the incorrect spelling of the ship)
    Obituary..
    The death of Mr. John Sanderson, which took place at "Westbury" Albert road Strathfield on
    Saturday. Removed one of the oldest nurserymen in the state. He arrived with the first batch of
    Government surveyors by the ship "Cherringhee" in 1855, to assist with the survey of the main
    Southern line to Picton. Settling in the Camden district a few years later, he spent over 30 years at
    “Camden Park” and Menangle, engaged in nursery and the florist trade and attained the age of 73.
    
    
    Note... It’s not known if John Sanderson worked for the Colony of N.S.W. as a member of the survey party, although he was listed on the shipping list as such.
    Note of interest... . According to the shipping list of the “Chowringhee”, John Sanderson was 21
    years of age in 1855 this then making the year he was born as 1834. But at the time of his marriage to
    Ellen Sheather at Camden, N.S.W. on 24thJanuary 1857. It’s believed by some researchers, that his age at
    this time was 21 years, suggesting the year of his birth as 1836 and again, his obituary which is claimed to
    have been dated 1909,   suggests that 1836 is more likely. However on Monday 17 thJune 1907, a funeral
    notice appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald. Advising that “The funeral of the late John Sanderson
    will leave his daughter’s residence, “Westbury” Albert Road, Strathfield, this day at 11.30 am for Enfield
    cemetery”. The undertaker was George Andrews, 60 Australia Street, Newtown, Sydney. At this time and
    until further evidence proves otherwise, I have taken the year of his birth as 1834. Ellen was the daughter
    of Henry Sheather, brother to our ancestor James Sheather. Both Sheather brothers and their families
    had arrived in the colony on board the "Royal George" on the 10thMarch 1839.
    
    Notes of interest: “Westbury” a few years ago was being used as a private hospital.
    Several descendants of the Sanderson family were afflicted with the hereditary, paralytic disease called palsy. This disease is thought to have come from the Sanderson line.
