         Ian was born in Southfield in Hessle. He went to school at Mr Englands prep school and then went to Haileyborough. When he left school the war had started and he went to do war service with the Forestry commission. It was not long before he joined the RAF and saw service in the middle east. It was here that he developed polyneuritis which left him with muscular weekness. When he was demobilised he went to Hull University and got a degree in engineering. He joined his uncle T.R.Ferrens as a clerk of works at Shiphams engineers and brass founders in Hull. He married Elizabeth Appleyard a millers daughter from Copgrove near Ripon. They lived inSouthfield Hessle and later in Brough where he retired. In retirement he served on tribunals. He died whilst living in Welton
