    Tom was born at Swarthmoor Hall in Furness . His father was a farmer. When he was five they all moved to Thornton le Fylde where his father was a farm manager.They later moved to a farm (Bainesse) at catterick. He was educated at The Friend's School, Wigton and Bootham School York. He studied Medicine at Edinburgh University. He was a house physician at York City Hospital in 1946 where he met Doreen.. After about three years in the RAF he went into general practice in York until he retired in 1983. He also had a part time job doing orthopaedic medicine at York Hosp. specialising in spinal manipulation. He served on Local Medical and Health Committees. For over 36 years he was on the Management Committee of the York Cheshire Home. He was a member of Round Table and was Chairman and Area chairman. He is a member of The York Company of Merchant Adventurers.
    He married Doreen Sanderson in 1948 and they have three children
