    Notes for WILLIAM SCOTT LAND: born 1832 youk
    April 7th 1883.
    Fossgate, Grosvenor Terrace, Bootham, and Clarence Street, York, Business Premises & Freehold Property for sale to be sold by Auction by Messrs. Acton & Acton at the White Swan Inn, Goodramgate on Tuesday, 17th April, l883 at 5 for 6 o'clock in the evening, Lot 1:  A freehold dwelling house and shop being No 25, Fossgate, in the City of York with the bakery therunto belonging on which the business of a Baker, Confectioner and Provision Dealer have been successfully carried on by the present owner, Mr. W. S. Land and his predecessors for upwards of 50 years.  The property has recently been rebuilt and the Bakery which contains 2 large ovens with 4 chambers above, thoroughly re-constructed, and there is every appliance on the premises for a purchaser carrying on an extensive business.     WHEN BIG PETER CAME TO YORK, An Octogenarian's Reminiscences, In the above photograph Mr. Scott Land, who :is now 83 years of age, is seen sitting on the rulley which conveyed " Big Peter " to the Minster when he was 13 years of ages in. the left-nand is a photo-graph of Mr. Land taken in 1912 when he was 80 .years of age. William Scott Land, now residing at 51„ Russell Street, York, one of the oldest of York Freemen, was born in the parish of Bishophill in 1832. During his early life--at the age of 13—he entered the employment of Messrs. Pickford and Co., Carriers, as junior clerk. From Mr. Land's .own account he had to do with the bringing of " Big Peter " to York Min§ter. His description of how be .delivered it at the Minster is as follows :— BIG PETER OF YORK. This bell, weighing 10 tons 15 cwts., was brought to York by Pickford and Co., carriers, from Messrs. Mears and Co., London, in 1845. Mr. Land further writes " Born in 1832, I was 13 years old, and two month" had not been at Pickford's more Kaye, s when the bell arrived. The manager, bell to the• said to me : Master Land, take this daresa_ inster and see you get it signed for !' delivery Thought it ;vas a joke of his to make me carry the you will see me on the rulley in the roduced above. I was dressed in trousers, picture reproduced jacket, and Tam o' Shanter. It took five pairs Eton of horses to drag the bell to the Cathedral. It was a great jubilee day in York. All the horses were decorated. The procession was accompanied by hands of music. just in passing it may be said that in the picture on the left hand is a sketch of how Mr. Land looked and dressed in 1912 when he was eighty years of age. He is now eight-three, and has just recovered from a serious illness. The picture Mr. Land speaks of was drawn in 1912 by a local artist. Mr. Land left York for London early in life, and returned to his birthplace in 1866, when he commenced business as a baker and Army contractor for bread, meat, poultry, potatoes, and other requirements. His shop was situated in Fossgate, and his other premises in Straker's Passage. The shop is now in the occupation of Mr. Rowlands, grocer and provision dealer. His first wife was one of the Strakers—a well known York family. He continued in business in Fossgate until the end of September, 18851 since when he has tived in retirement. , To hear Mr. Land gossip about his contracts and now prices doubled during war times, and for other reasons is very interesting. The details of how much Ile gained and how much a week he lost during UP and down experiences as an Army con-tractor would fill quite a book. Even at his advanced age Mr. Land is a charming person-and his gossips about York and the peculiar °cal characters with whom he became acquainted Would make interesting- reading were space available. The details of his life show that Yorkshiremen and north countrymen are much sought after in London by employers because of their. alertness and power •to bear hard work and privation better than their southern brethren. One of Mr. Land's school fellows at Osbons   School, York, was Sir Edward Pears. indeed were chums together.
