    Notes for JOHN BIRCH LAND:born 1833 d 1899
    25.2.1841. John Birch Land son of William Land of the City of York, combmaker
    apprentice to William Haxby of the same city, Whitesmith for seven years by Indenture, dated 1st February inst.
    
    3rd July, 1858.
    No.2 Belle Vue Street, Heslington Road, excellent rosewood sitting room furniture bedroom effects and kitchen utensils.  Mr. James Walker begs most respectfully to announce that he has received instructions from Mr. J. B. Land (in consequence of him leaving York) to sell by auction without reserve, on Tuesday next the 6th July 1858 upon the premises, No 2, Belle Vue Street all the good and useful household furniture, sleeping room requisites, culinary utensils etc. etc.  Also a capital Sea Chest very complete with zinc furniture, slides, etc. (Weighton maker, Woolwich). sailors hammock, etc.,etc. For particulars see bills in circulation.  Sale to commence at 11.30 for 12.  Central Auction Rooms, New Street, 30.6. 1858.     I found John Birch Land aged 58 living at Portsea, Portsmouth with a wife called Mary Bich Land aged 30 who was born at Maryleborne, London, so looked like he had remarried!! 
    John Birch Land also moved to Scarborough-where he set up as a builder and William invested significantly in his brothers housing development projects.
