Mercedes' father was Manuel Tejera Teran and her mother was Maria Mendoza Beola. Her paternal grandparents are Jose Maria Tejera Perez-Bravo and Josefa Teran Rodriguez; her maternal grandfather is Juan Mendoza Mendez and her maternal grandmother was Trinidad Beola Aguirre. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Juan, Jose , Manuel, Josefina, Maria Teresa, Maria, Maria and Soledad.
