Charles was born in 1850 in Trevethin.1   Charles' father was William Stewart and his mother was Catherine .  His paternal grandparents were William Stewart and Mary Harries.  He was the sixth of eight children.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Joseph, Boithan, Caiaphas , Maria, Lebina and Bathsheba.
