Boithan was born in 1844 in Trevethin.1   Boithan's father was William Stewart and his mother was Catherine .  His paternal grandparents were William Stewart and Mary Harries.  He was the third of eight children.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Joseph, Charles, Caiaphas , Maria, Lebina and Bathsheba.
