Thomas was born in 1838 in Tythegston.1   Thomas' father was Richard John/Jones and his mother was Dinah Howell/s.  His paternal grandparents were Hopkin John and Jennet Richard.  He was the sixth of ten children.  He had three brothers and six sisters, named Richard, Mary, David, Charlotte, Hannah, Dinah, Catherine , Sarah and Annelyna.
