Gordon was born in 1894 in Bryncethin.1   Gordon's father was Charles Coles and his mother was Alice  Maude Gribble.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Coles and Harriet How; his maternal grandparents were Abraham Gribble and Martha Pugsley.  He was the fourth of six children.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Francis, Henry, Leonard, Florence and Catherine.  He died due to natural causes or old age at the age of 67 in 1961 in Llanharan.  His burial was in Llanharan Cemetry.2
