Ellen was born about October 1850 in Lambeth, Surrey.1   Ellen's father was Joseph James Syrett and her mother was Sarah Mary Coveney. She had a brother named Joseph.  She was the older of the two children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named George, Jesse and Amelia.
