Charles was born in October 1870.  Charles' father was John Hollingdale and his mother was Jane Bennett.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hollingdale and Mary Greenfield; his maternal grandparents were John Bennett and Jane. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Arthur, Thomas, Alice and Louisa.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
