Arthur was born about 1876 in Poplar, Middlesex.1   Arthur's father was John Hollingdale and his mother was Jane Bennett.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hollingdale and Mary Greenfield; his maternal grandparents were John Bennett and Jane. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Charles, Alice and Louisa.  He was the youngest of the five children.
