Laura's father was Joseph Whittle and her mother was Grace Maughan. Her paternal grandparents were James Whittle and Louisa J. Grundy; her maternal grandparents were John Maughan and Sarah Cain. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, Stephen, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Grace, Margaret and Jenny. She was the eighth oldest of the nine known children.
