Thomas SPENCE

Thomas was born in May 1850 in Knottingly, Yorkshire.¹

Birth Notes
- The 1851 census transcription shows Thomas as aged 1 month on census day. The image shows this should be 11 months which is more credible than a 1 month old baby travelling from Knottingly to Leeming.
  
  There is a birth index record for Thomas at Pontefract, which would be the registration centre for Knottingly. There is no birth index record at Leyburn, which covered Masham area.

Thomas' father was HENRY SPENCE and his mother was RACHEL WOODWARD. His paternal grandparents were JOHN SPENCE and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were ADAM WOODWARD and FRANCES. He had a sister named FRANCES. He was the older of the two known children. He had a half-sister named Mary.
