  ***This record is for Ann Spence rather than Frances but is the nearest fit to the census records from 1871 onward, which report birth in Bedale area. However age consistently reported as x4, would place birth April 1856 to March 1857. Thus Q4 1857 is rather late unless Frances was fuzzy re her age.
  
  There are Fanny Spence birth records further south or in Lincolnshire.
  
  It should be noted that Frances's brother had birth registered at Knottingly, confirmed on 1851 census, but from 1871 onward usually gave Masham or Bedale as birthplace, though no matching registrations can be found.

FRANCES' father was HENRY SPENCE and her mother was RACHEL WOODWARD. Her paternal grandparents were JOHN SPENCE and <Unknown>; her maternal grandparents were ADAM WOODWARD and FRANCES. She had a brother named Thomas. She was the younger of the two known children. She had a half-sister named Mary. She died about February 1914 in Newcastle upon Tyne ?.²
