    1/ Dear Brian,
    I will reply in bits - partly so no one message is too long and partly to allow me to avoid my usual habit of confusing individuals in different generations!
    
    On your comments questions at the end of your note:
    Your points 1(a) to 1(d) linking Wright Thomason to his mother a Higson/Hickson; the marriage of Jonathan - an uncommon name for Thomason children to a Mary Higson can thus be reinforced with the use of "Wright" as a forename for their children. This is not solely a Higson forename but it is indicative. I think the Jonathan/Mary higson marriage is proven as firmly as many links can be.
    
    Going backwards is more speculative - a sis ofen the case...I think the Children of Thomas Higson and Mary For(r)est have to be linked in various ways. Three Thomas/Mary Higson children link to their parents in the 1841 census and so give a baseline for names and places of baptism one is unique in age - Wright Higson - in the subsequent census records. Mary For(r)est is linked to Cheshire, and her son Wright is at home in 1851's census.
    On the issue of linking Mary Higson to her parents and sibling - I will send a seperate note.

    2/Brian these notes were written quite a while ago before much census data was on line and there are other factors - the 1841 record of the 1782 Thomas. Most pre 1841 data must rely on individual parish records or the IGI and they are almost never conclusive with common names in a particular parish.

    1. The Thomas Mary Higson Family:

    I searched the IGI for children to Thomas Higson and a wife Mary in Lancashire in 1790-1830.
    
    This produces 25 possible births in the whole of Lancashire to a couple with these names. I reduced this number to 9 by:
    
    1. Discounting 7 Swinton births as an alternative family, or families, with dates that overlap Deane births 1808 to 1828. This leaves 18 possibilities.
    
    2. 3 of the 18 are duplicates - entries for Rumworth without exact dates for Deane christenings with exact date:
    
    Sarah 1828 and 1824, William 1821 and 1822 and Wright 1821 and 1820. This leaves 15 possibilities.
    
    3. There are two births in Leigh. At least 9 Higson males: John Samuel James Robert and Thomas, have children in Leigh between 1812 and 1825. The 2 Thomas and Mary children: Betty and Henry could in theory be children of the “right” family. And I have not “looked” for them in Census records - but, with christening dates of 1821 and 1822, they overlap Deane Christenings for William and Wright - so I discount them. This leaves 13
    
    4. Two Atherton Christenings in 1791 and 1792 are too early given the ages of the children still looking possible. This leaves 11.
    
    5. One is discounted because the wife’s surname is given as Ball. This leaves 10.
    
    6. One, for 1830, for Hannah simply refers to Lancashire as a birth place and so is discounted leaving 9
    
    5 This means that if there is only one Thomas Mary Couple in Deane at the time, ( and NB non of these dates excluding the Rumworth dates at point 2 overlap) and if the IGI is accurate – which for the local Deane and St Peter’s parishes it seems to be - the children in this family are.

    Maria bapt 1804 in Great Lever to Thomas & Mary.
    Thomas bapt 1810 in Bolton to Thomas & Mary.
    James 1806 & Esther 1808 bapt in Bolton to Thomas & Mary.
    
    These dates could reflect two generations having children but other links exist between some of the children.
    
    BRN Note re other Mary Higson Lancs area births not obviously married to someone other than Jonathon.

    Wright Thomason's birth cert. records his mother's maiden name as Mary Hickson.   Mary, mother, made her mark when registering on 2nd June 1851 with address Low Green, Hindley. There is no IGI record of a Thomason-Hickson marriage and only one for Thomason-Higson.
