Joseph's father was Thomas THOMASON and his mother was Jane Beckwith. His paternal grandparents were JONATHAN THOMASON and Mary Higson. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Isabel, Amelia and Edith. He was the third oldest of the six known children. He had a half-sister named Ruth.
