Henry was born in 1877.  Henry's father was Thomas Spence and his mother was Elizabeth Bell.  His paternal grandparents were Henry  Spence and Rachel Woodward; his maternal grandparents were William Bell and Elizabeth Sunter.  He had three brothers and four sisters, named Adam, John, Herbert, Margaret, Ethel, Minnie and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the eight known children.  He had a half-sister named Mary.
