Mary was born in January 1861 in Wolsingham, Tow Law, Durham.1  Mary's father was John Maughan and her mother was Sarah Cain.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Cain and Ann.  She had a brother and eight sisters, named William, Jane, Frances, Margaret, Elizabeth, Phoebe, Sarah, Grace and Ann.
