Joseph was born about August 1876 in Bolton, Lancashire, England.1   Joseph's father was John Crank and his mother was Jane Kitchen.  He had a sister named Emily.  He was the older of the two children.  He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Elizabeth, Henry and Mary.
