William was born about 1854 in Westhoughton, Lancashire.1   William's father was Henry Coop and his mother was Ann Coop.  His paternal grandfather was Joseph Coop and his paternal grandmother is <Unknown>.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named Wright, Joseph, Mary and Ann.  He was the second oldest of the five known children.
