Gertrude was born about 1880 in Clapham, Bedfordshire, England.1   Gertrude's father was James Barnes Barker and her mother was Ann.  Her paternal grandfather was George James Barker and her paternal grandmother is Elizebeth.  She had six brothers and five sisters, named Henry, George, Ellen, Thomas, Charles, James, Elizabeth, Jane, Fanny, Lydia and Hilda.  She was the tenth oldest of the twelve children.
