Thomas was born about December 1846 in Exford, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on January 3rd, 1847 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1 2   Thomas' father was George Thorne and his mother was Elizabeth Adams.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Thorne and Elizabeth Parkin; his maternal grandparents are Robert Adams and Mary Court. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Mary and Elizabeth.
