Maria was born about May 1850 in Withypool, Somerset, England and her baptism took place on June 30th, 1850 in Withypool Parish Church.1 2  Maria's father was John Thorne and her mother was Sarah Greenslade.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Thorne and Elizabeth Parkin; her maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and her maternal grandmother is Mary. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Charlotte and Eliza.  She was the youngest of the twelve children.
