John was born about August 1854 in Withypool, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on September 3rd, 1854 in Withypool Parish Church, Somerset, England.1 2  John's father was William Greenslade Thorne and his mother was Ann Thorne.  His paternal grandfather is Unknown Greenslade? and his paternal grandmother was Susan Thorne; his maternal grandparents were Richard Thorne and Elizabeth Skinner. He had five sisters named Ann, Mary, Elizabeth, Matilda and Georgiana.  He was the oldest of the six children.
