John was born about November 1st, 1829 in Exford, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on November 8th, 1829 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1  John's father was Richard Thorne and his mother was Elizabeth Skinner.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Thorne and Elizabeth Parkin. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Richard, James, Mary, Ann and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
