Mary was born in December 1860 in Cutcombe, Somerset, England.1  Mary's father was Joseph Steer and her mother was Elizabeth Cousins.  Her paternal grandparents were John Steer and Agnes Hoyels. She had a brother and a sister, named John and Eliza.  She was the oldest of the three children.
