John was born about May 1853 in Combe Martin, Devon, England.1  John's father was Robert SMALDON and his mother was Elizabeth Challacombe.  His paternal grandparents were ROBERT SMALDON and ANN; his maternal grandparents were John Challacombe and Elizabeth Challacombe. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Maria, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
