William was born about February 1854 in Exford, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on March 5th, 1854 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1 2   William's father was John POOLE and his mother was Ann Jones.  His paternal grandparents were HUGH POOLE and MARY HOOPER; his maternal grandparents were William Jones and Anna Jones. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, John, Ann, Eliza, Mary, Anna, Prudence and Fanny.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine known children.
