William was born about August 1st, 1852 in Exford, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on August 8th, 1852 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1 2   William's father was Nicholas Horwood and his mother was Mary Seage.  His paternal grandfather is Robert Horwood and his paternal grandmother was Agnes Bynon; his maternal grandparents are Courtney Seage and Elizabeth Bradford. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Charles, Nicholas, John, Robert, John, James, Mary and Esther.  He was the youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Ben, Anna, Amelia, Rhoda, Ellen, Emily and Mary.
