Nicholas was born about April 1st, 1838 in Exford, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on April 14th, 1838 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1 2  Nicholas' father was Nicholas Horwood and his mother was Mary Seage.  His paternal grandfather is Robert Horwood and his paternal grandmother was Agnes Bynon; his maternal grandparents are Courtney Seage and Elizabeth Bradford. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Charles, John, Robert, John, James, William, Mary and Esther.  He was the third oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Ben, Anna, Amelia, Rhoda, Ellen, Emily and Mary.
