John was born about September 1st, 1840 in Exford, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on September 6th, 1840 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1 2   John's father was Nicholas Horwood and his mother was Mary Seage.  His paternal grandfather is Robert Horwood and his paternal grandmother was Agnes Bynon; his maternal grandparents are Courtney Seage and Elizabeth Bradford. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Charles, Nicholas, Robert, John, James, William, Mary and Esther.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Ben, Anna, Amelia, Rhoda, Ellen, Emily and Mary.  He died about January 1st, 1842.  He was buried on January 9th, 1842 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.3
