Esther was born about January 1st, 1843 in Exford, Somerset, England and her baptism took place on January 11th, 1843 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1 2   Esther's father was Nicholas Horwood and her mother was Mary Seage.  Her paternal grandfather is Robert Horwood and her paternal grandmother was Agnes Bynon; her maternal grandparents are Courtney Seage and Elizabeth Bradford. She had seven brothers and a sister, named Charles, Nicholas, John, Robert, John, James, William and Mary.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Ben, Anna, Amelia, Rhoda, Ellen, Emily and Mary.
