Charles was born about December 1st, 1834 in Exford, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on December 25th, 1854 in Exford Parish Church, Somerset.1 2  Charles' father was Nicholas Horwood and his mother was Mary Seage.  His paternal grandfather is Robert Horwood and his paternal grandmother was Agnes Bynon; his maternal grandparents are Courtney Seage and Elizabeth Bradford. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Nicholas, John, Robert, John, James, William, Mary and Esther.  He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Ben, Anna, Amelia, Rhoda, Ellen, Emily and Mary.
