Alida Bessy was born about November 1856 in Hanham Court, Gloucestershire, England.¹ Alida Bessy's father was Handworth Howell and her mother was Betsey NEWTON. Her paternal grandparents were William A S Howell and Betsy Howell; her maternal grandparents were James NEWTON and Grace Newton. She had four brothers named Harry, Archie, Melvin Hansworth and Willie Fairfax. She was the oldest of the five children.
