Richard was born about 1847 in Rowcombe, Somerset.1   Richard's father was John Gregory and his mother was Sarah Tuckfield.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Gregory and Fanny; his maternal grandparents are John Tuckfield and Mary. He had a brother and a sister, named Charles and Fanny.  He was the oldest of the three children.
