Mabel's father was William James Greenslade and his mother was Lucy Howe Holloway. His paternal grandparents were Robert Greenslade and Sarah Taylor; his maternal grandfather is NK and his maternal grandmother was Charity Holloway. He had a brother and six sisters, named George, Anne, Bessie, Mary, Eleanor, Lucy and Evelyn. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
