Richard was born about 1825 in Exford, Somerset and his baptism took place on June 28th, 1825 in Exford, Somerset, Parish Church.1 2   Richard's father was John Thorne and his mother was Sarah Greenslade.  His maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and his maternal grandmother is Mary.  He had three brothers and eight sisters, named John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Charlot, Eliza and Maria.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.
